『町のねずみと田舎のねずみ』

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

　　　　　A country mouse invited a town mouse, who was a close friend, to pay him a visit and share in his country living. As they hunted about the bare plough-lands, eating their wheat-stalks and roots pulled up from the hedge-row, the town mouse said to his friend: "You live here the life of the ants. My house in town is a horn of plenty. I'm surrounded with every luxury, and if you'll come and visit me, you shall have an ample share of our fine food."
　　　　　The country mouse was easily persuaded, and returned to the town with his friend. On their arrival, they went to the pantry and the town mouse placed before him bread, barley, beans, dried figs, honey, raisins, and last of all, a delicious piece of cheese. The country mouse was delighted at the sight of so much good food, and complained about his hard life in the country. Just as they settled down to eat, however, someone opened the pantry door. Both the mice ran off squeaking as fast as they could to a hole so narrow that the two of them could only just squeeze through. After a while they came out again, but they had scarcely begun their feast when someone else came to the pantry for some food. The two mice, more frightened than before, scampered away and hid themselves once more. Hardly a moment passed when they were not interrupted. At last the country mouse, almost famished, said to this friend: "Although you have prepared for me a very fine feast, I must leave you to enjoy it by yourself. It is surrounded by too many dangers to please me. I prefer my bare plough-lands and roots from the hedge-row, where at least I can live in safety and eat without fear."

『いのちの水』

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Ｔｈｅ　Ｗａｔｅｒ　Ｏｆ　Ｌｉｆｅ

　　　　Once upon a time there was a king who was so ill that everybody feared he was going to die. His three sons were very sad and went out into the palace gardens to cry. There they met an old man, who asked them why they were crying. The princes told him their father was so ill that he was sure to die, for nothing could save him.
　　　 The old man said, "I know a way to save him : a drink from the water of life will make him better, but it is very difficult to find."
　　　 "I will soon find it", said the eldest son, and he went to the sick king and begged him to let him set out at once in search of the water of life, which alone could save him.
　　　 "No. The danger is too great. I would rather die." said the king.
　　　 But the son begged and begged until at last the king consented. After he had ridden a long way he met a dwarf on the road.
　　　"Where are you off to in such a hurry?" asked the dwarf.
　　　"That's none of your business !" said the prince rudely, and he rode off. But the dwarf was very angry and made an evil wish, so that soon after, the prince came into a narrow mountain pass and the farther he rode the narrower it grew, till at last it was so narrow that he couldn't go on, but he couldn't turn his horse around either, or dismount, and he sat there, helplessly trapped.

『猿カニ合戦』

　　　　　　　　　　　　　The Battle Between the Monkey and the Crab
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
　　　　One day, a monkey was sunning himself. He saw a crab carrying a big rice ball. He asked the crab to exchange it for a persimmon seed. The crab agreed to make the exchange.
　　　　She watered it every day, and at last the persimmon tree bore the fruit. But the crab couldn't climb up the tree. She decided to wait until the fruit fell to the ground.
　　　　Just then, the monkey came along and climbed up the tree. The crab asked him to throw a sweet persimmon to her. But, he threw an unripe persimmon at the crab.
　　　　It struck her, and killed the poor crab. She sacrificed her life to protect her babies. The baby crabs began crying. Then a bee came flying along, and said: "What happened to you ?" "Our mother has been killed, " said the baby crabs.
　　　　The bee was very angry and said, "Everybody is angry with that crafty monkey. I'll get my friends together to punish him."
　　　　The bee gathered a chestnut, cow-dung, and mortar. They want to the monkey's house. However, the monkey was not there. So they hid themselves somewhere in and around the house.
　　　　At sunset, the monkey came home, and began to warm himself by the fireplace. Then the chestnut leaped out of the fireplace and flew into the monkey's face. He ran to the water jar to ice his face.
　　　　 Then the bee flew out and stung the monkey's burnt face. He ran to the door to get out. Then the cow--dung, sitting in the doorway, caused the monkey to slip and fall as he stepped on it.
　　　　Before the monkey could get up, the mortar fell down on him from the roof at last.

『マッチ売りの少女』

　　　　It was a very, very cold evening on New Year's Eve. The snow was falling on the dark streets. A little girl was wandering along the streets. The poor little girl had to walk around without wearing any shoes because she lost her mother's slippers.
　　　　She had a lot of matches in her apron, and a small bundle of them in her hand, but so one bought the matches. Nobody gave her any money, either. She was very, very hungry and cold. She couldn't go home, because she didn't sell any matches and she hadn't earned any money yet.
　　　　As time went on, it became too cold for the little girl to move her hands. So, she struck one match against the wall. When she held her hands around the match she thought that she was sitting before a big stove. When she tried to warm her feet, the fire went out and the stove disappeared.
　　　　Another match was struck. She was sitting under a beautiful Christmas tree. It was more beautiful than the one she saw before at the rich merchant's house. A lot of candles were lit up under the green branches, and many small colored pictures were hanging on the tree. When she tried to stretch her hands out toward them, the match burnt out.
　　　　A new match was struck. Her grandmother appeared. She looked very happy and she was smiling.
"Grandmother !" the girl cried out. "Please take me with you. I know you diappear when the match burns out."
　　　　So she struck all the matches to make her grandmother stay longer. The matches burnt very brightly. Her grandmother looked very beautiful and kind. She held the Little match Girl in her arms and they flew happily together to paradise, where neither hunger nor cold would be.

『ヘンゼルとグレーテル』

There was once a poor woodcutter who lived at the edge of a great forest with his two children, a boy named Hansel and a girl named Gretel. Their mother had died long ago and the woodcutter had married again, so they had a stepmother.

The family was already very poor indeed and often went hungry, and once, when there was a great famine in the land, the woodcutter could not provide even a crust of bread for them.

One evening, as he lay in bed tossing and turning with the worry of it, he sighed and said to his wife,"What will become of us? How can we feed the children, let alone ourselves?"
"I'll tell you what, husband. Early tomorrow morning we will take them into the thickest part of the forest, light a fire, and give them each a little piece of bread. Then we will go to our work and leave them alone, so they will not find the way home again, and we shall be rid of them."said his
wife.
