The Ice Festival on Mt. Kujyu, in Oita

This is "a Statue of Liberty made of ice" in Oita
Prefecture, Japan which is very beautiful.

The Ice Festival of 2005 was held from Feb. 11th. to Feb. 13th.
on Mt. Kujyu, in Oita prefecture.
This festival is similar with Yuki-matsuri, the snow festival
held in Spporo in February.
It features elaborately sculptured snow / ice statues constructed
in the park.


Mt. Kujyu, which is 1788 meters high, is located in a famous
Kujyu range of mountains.
This range, which consists of 20 more over active volcanoes, is
also art of the well known Aso- Kujyu National Park in Kyushu,
Japan.

This snow sculpture is one of the "Shichifukujin"
called "Ebisu" who has a fishing rod in his right hand,
and holds a sea bream in his left hand.
Shichifukujin are the seven deities of Indian, Chinese and
Japanese origin.
The six gods and one goddess are usually depicted on a treasure
ship, and are thought to bring wealth and fortune.
Ebisu in particular is thought to be a god for fisherman to bring
a big catch, for farmers to bring a good harvest, for businessmen
to bring prosperity on their business.
